SonyEricsson P900
Bluetooth
just installed the
gnome-bluetooth
unofficial
debian packages.
notice that you have to run gnome-bluetooth-admin before typing
bluetooth:/// in your nautilus location bar to see any devices.
also to receive files
over the phone you have to start the gnome-obex-server which is
an applet (also available from 'System Tools' menu and the received files will
be saved on your home folder. drag-n-drop to p900 works very well but a queue
would be nice to drop more than a file at a time.
also interesting is the
gnome-bluetooth mailing-list.
mounting p900 on linux
wow... this actually works better than i thought. you have access to everything - ok, almost everyting since you can't write on some parts (you don't want to bork your p900, do you?). the file transfer seems to be faster and the best is that you can write (almost) where you want compared to bluetooth push method.
get p3nfs, compile and install it. read it's bluetooth doc. it's pretty self explaining. the only thing that i changed was point 8:
p3nfsd -UIQ -tty /dev/rfcomm0 -dir /mnt/p900
to let it mount on /mnt/p900
instead of it's default dir.
debian packages
finally i found some time to package p3nfs for debian which you can find it on my little debian rep. also a little script that i use for automating a few things. this script does also loading and unloading bluez and usb modules since my X31 has a "argh..." bug with usb. see the included notes and of course the source code.oops... i forgot to build source packages. hopefully i can do that during the next few days.
evolution sync
haven't tried it out yet. since i need a clean cut between private and business entries. i'm using lotus notes at work and it also syncs all private entries. i don't want private entries at work nor business entries at home.... so i leave this to you to try it out.
but here you can read more docs about it:
- Edd Dumbill's blog about synronising with evolution.
- Brian's doc on Alfonso's page
- multisync
missing software
some of the standard features/softwares/programs/applications i missed are; set a birthday date on a contact base and mark them in calendar (this shouldn't be that complicated and i still don't understand why it's not done from sonyericsson - it's delivered as a 3rd party software which you have to buy), password manager (is delivered on CD as a 3rd party software - don't know if it's free or you have also to buy)office software
indeed there is a commercial office suite (well only for SpreadSheet and TextEditor). but do you really need something like that? what do you want to edit or create on your keyboardless p900 device? wouldn't it be better to write down on a piece of paper and rewrite it at home or office on a real office application? i believe the standard document viewer which comes preinstalled with p900 is enough to peak on a document, event it's a little bit too slow.missing gpl software site
there is not much gpl'ed software nor sites not even p3nfs is listed at freshmeat. the only site that i could find is symbianopensource and even this seems quite dead. maybe you could write some useful opensource applications???tips on web browser
i assume you don't want to connect to internet every time you accidently press the internet button. so just choose a small page and save it with "internet=>save page" and right after that set this url as you homepage with "edit=>preferences".secure mail account
contrary to my previous statement that it's a pitty that one can't check his/her mail over IMAPS this isn't correct. according to information i got from Michael Clarkson:This is the same for the P800 and drove me mad for a while, the problem is that the SE have chosen to implement RFC2595 for secure IMAPS support.i haven't tested it yet! This requires your server to be listening on the default IMAP port 143 and produce the LOGINDISABLED & STARTTLS flags in response to the client sending a CAPABILTIES request.
If you control your own mail server, then you should be able to switch on this RFC 2595 behaviour.
dasher - an alternative text input method
a few days ago i found the dasher website. it's an alternative text input method (also included into the upcoming gnome 2.6). it looks really promissing and since it's under gpl, ported and packaged for ipaq and they are looking for palm developers it shouldn't be that hard to port it on UIQ. what do you think?useful links
